Definition of Lagging Power Factor. In ac circuits lagging power factor, is achieved when the load is inductive in nature. This is so because when a purely capacitive or resistive capacitive load is present then there exists a phase difference between voltage and current in which the current lags the voltage. Thus the power factor of such circuits is of lagging nature. 2018-06-04 Lagging power factor can be formally described as the current that reaches its peak value up to 90 degrees later than the voltage. All AC motors (except overexcited synchronous motors) and transformers operate at lagging power factor. Simply put, if the load is inductive then the power factor is lagging.

It is a simple AC exciter which is connected on the main shaft of the motor and operates with the motor’s rotor circuit for power factor improvement. Frankly speaking, I don’t have much information about phase advancer. But, the principle is same. Synchronous machine is nothing but a machine operates by the principle of electromagnetic induction… energy flows from stationary winding to rotor winding…due to the induction effect the current always lags behind the voltage thus it can operated power factor, as the grid is then supplying less active power, but the same amount of reactive power.

For pure resistive load, power factor angle becomes 0°. Lagging power factor (for inductive load) If the resulting current phase angle is more negative in relation to the driving (source) Therefore, the power factor of a load is always between 0 and 1, with 1 power factor meaning that all the current is going towards delivery of power to the load, and 0 power factor meaning that no part of the current is going towards delivery of power to the load (i.e. it is all out-of-phase or harmonic current). same as lagging power factor.

The loads such as induction motors, coils, lamps, etc are inductive and have Lagging pf. Lagging power factor is the property of an electrical circuit in which if an AC voltage is applied, the current flowing through the circuit will be lagging the voltage. In an alternating power system, the voltage and the current are not constant in magnitude but keep varying with time. A Power Factor is usually stated as "leading" or "lagging" to show the sign of the phase angle. With a purely resistive load the current and voltage changes polarity in step and the power factor will be 1. Electrical energy flows in a single direction across the network in each cycle.
