Since 2013, the Secretariats of the Basel, Rotterdam and Stockholm conventions, three international environmental agreements, are merged into a single Secretariat, known as BRS MEAs, serving the three conventions. Its aim is to protect human health and the environment against the adverse effects of hazardous chemicals and wastes. The annexes of the Stockholm Convention list the full list chemicals subject to international trade controls. Australia does not automatically adopt controls for chemicals listed in the Stockholm Convention. Each chemical must be separately ratified by the Australian parliament following inclusion in the annexes. The GEF provides funding to assist developing countries in meeting the objectives of international environmental conventions.
